N2  - Besucher archäologischer Freilichtmuseen erwarten zuverlässige Informationen. Ähnliche wissenschaftlichen Standards sollten auch auf die Living History angewendet werden. In Deutschland wird Living History aber weitgehend von Hobbyisten getragen, die in erster Linie ihre Freizeit genießen möchten. Pädagogische Konzepte und Techniken werden deshalb nur in geringem Maße diskutiert und gezielt angewendet. Andererseits haben es deutsche Wissenschaftler bisher häufig versäumt, ihre Arbeit für ein breites Publikum verständlich und interessant darzustellen. Living History als Mittel der Wissenschaftskommunikation wird von ihnen nur zögerlich akzeptiert. Der Grund wird nicht zuletzt im geringen Professionalisierungsgrad der Darsteller zu suchen sein Deshalb braucht es ein neues Verständnis von Living History in Deutschland. Wie z. B. in Großbritannien und den USA sollte Living History zu einem Berufsbild weiterentwickelt werden.
N2  - Visitors of archaeological or historical museums would expect well researched information about the artefacts exhibited. The same scientific standards of quality should be set towards living history, concerning equipment and interpretation techniques. Unfortunately, many living history events in our museums still lack both. Today, living history in Germany is dominated by re-enactment groups mostly. While these groups enthusiastically work on their equipment, interpretation techniques are discussed amongst them rarely. In fact, a recent study revealed that German re-enactors want to perform their hobby for their own leisure in the first place. Therefore, their usefulness for educational programmes in museums is questionable. On the other hand, German scholars of history have failed for decades to reach the public because their work was aimed to their colleagues only and not suited for a wider audience. Yet, those scholars recognise the benefits of living history only bit by bit, probably because it is mostly done by hobby re-enactment groups, instead of professional heritage interpreters. To solve this dilemma, we need to come to a new understanding of living history in Germany. As in other countries, e.g. the U.S.A. and Great Britain, living history should be developed to a profession, performed by trained heritage interpreters.
