Heiligungsverständnis und Verkündigung bei Robert Pearsall Smith

  • Robert Pearsall Smith played an important role within the Holiness movement. Within a few years his teachings about "Holiness through faith" spread through Europe and had an important impact on movements like Keswick and the German "Heiligungsbewegung". The purpose of this master thesis is to show the influence of his understanding of holiness on his preaching. Due to the importance for the further analysis of his thoughts on holiness, which were often governed by his experiences, an outline of the Smith’s life is given to get the historical background. Afterwards Smiths understanding of holiness regarding his view on sin, separation of justification and sanctification and spiritual baptism is discussed, including other prominent opinions of the holiness movement. With these results his preaching is examined with an emphasis on the rhetorical analysis of two sermons and the significance of emotion, staging and performance. A correlation between his preaching and his understanding of holiness can be found in Smith’s use of emotion in his sermons in contrast to his theoretical concept of will based on faculty psychology. From a modern perspective this could have lead to the fact, that the audience of Smith, who had experienced emotions in the performative act of a spiritual baptism, felt manipulated after Smith lost his credibility in the scandal of Brigthon 1875.
