Ruth: Images of an Unfulfillable Longing.
- Gillmayr-Bucher, Susanne
- The story of Ruth has been an inspiration for poets throughout the centuries. Thereby her biblical portrait has been transformed and discussed from varying perspectives. This article focusses on 20th century’s German lyric poetry and traces the different interests the poems take in Ruth. From Else Lasker-Schüler, Gottfried Benn and Bertolt Brecht, Rose Ausländer, Paul Celan and Nelly Sachs to Christine Busta and Eva Zeller, but also up to younger writers like Matthias Hermann, poets attend to this biblical character. Focussing particularly on Ruth’s longing for a new life and a place were she belongs, the poems reflect the changing social and political situation of the 20th century through the eyes of Ruth. Thereby the promises of the biblical story and contemporary desires meet. Contrary to the biblical text, however, the modern lyric stays with Ruth’s longing and does not portray its fulfillment. It is the ambition and the vision which appear to be most appealing to the poets.
